Reprieve for Childcare Vouchers as Government Postpones Tax-Free Childcare Scheme...

Gemelli has just received official notification from HMRC that the Government’s plans to launch the new Tax-Free Childcare scheme have been delayed until early 2017. Prior to this announcement, it had been anticipated that Tax-Free Childcare would launch in autumn 2015, replacing the existing Childcare Voucher scheme.

This postponement means that working parents with children aged up to 16 – and the businesses that employ them – still have the opportunity to take advantage of the current Childcare Voucher scheme. Operated through employers, the scheme allows working parents to pay for childcare prior to having tax and National Insurance deducted from their salary. For many parents, the scheme can save them almost £1,000 a year on childcare, and employers benefit too, saving up to £402 per employee, per year in National Insurance contributions.

Registering now for the Childcare Voucher scheme makes good sense: It will eventually be closed, but parents who have already registered will be able to choose whether to stay on the existing scheme or switch to Tax-Free Childcare, depending on which best suits their circumstances at the time.

Save £1000's on childcare before it's too late...

Changes to the Childcare Voucher Scheme are due to come into force in autumn 2015, but the Government’s new Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) plans have already received criticism: They will not be available for households with only one working parent, initially not for children over 5, it may leave one child families worse off  and parents will have to reapply every three months.

Until TFC comes into force though, employers can still offer staff the existing salary sacrifice Childcare Voucher Scheme. This current scheme, provides parents with vouchers and gives an annual tax saving of up to £933 per parent employee. Open to any size of business, employers can administer the salary sacrifice scheme themselves, or use a voucher provider who will operate the scheme on their behalf.
