When can I join the Scheme?
You can join the Scheme at any time throughout the year. 

What is allowable?
A statutory fee or contribution shown in the HMRC List 3 is allowable where employees pay this out of their earnings from an employment and are required to pay this as a statutory condition of following their employment. An annual subscription to a body shown in the list as approved by HMRC is allowable where employees pay this out of their earnings from an employment and the activities of the body are directly relevant to the employment.

The activities of a body are directly relevant to an employment where the performance of the duties of that employment is either:

  •  directly affected by the knowledge concerned
  • involves the exercise of the profession concerned

What type of Professional Fees can be paid for using the scheme?
Professional Fees or Subscriptions for any body that appears on the current HMRC List 3. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/

What does ’ directly relevant’ mean?
Where the performance of the duties of the current employment is either directly affected by the knowledge concerned and/or involves the exercise of the profession concerned.

How will a Salary Exchange Scheme affect my pension?
With a company pension your salary and the value of any salary exchange benefits may be considered as pensionable earnings.

Will Salary Exchange for the Professional Fees and Subscriptions Scheme affect my Tax Credits?
Most people benefit but, if you are lower paid and claiming benefits or tax credits, before signing up for this scheme you should contact the HM Revenue and Customs for advice - Telephone 0845 300 3900, to check how using Professional Fees and Subscriptions Scheme could affect your situation.

What happens if I leave employment?
If you leave before the end of the salary exchange period, you must pay the balance of the amount outstanding and this will be deducted from your final net pay.

What happens if I am off work?
If you are off work due to maternity, sick leave, etc. you may continue the salary exchange deductions. The exceptions to this are if the deductions take you below the National Minimum Wage or if you stop receiving salary and as a result do not have any earnings from which the salary exchange can be deducted. If deductions cannot be made your employer will suspend payments until you are earning again.
