Childcare Vouchers

Two ways to get maximum value from Childcare Vouchers...

Following the expense of  the summer holidays  -  registering for the Childcare Voucher scheme will help working mums and dads make their cash go further – and save their employer money at the same time. This salary exchange scheme allows working parents to pay for childcare prior to having tax and National Insurance deducted from their salary, saving many couples over £1,000 a year on childcare – and reducing the NI contributions their employer has to pay by up to £402 per employee per year.  Vouchers can be used for children from birth up to 1st September following their 15th birthday (or 16th birthday if they are registered as disabled). The scheme helps both parties: Hard-working parents are able to afford quality childcare, and their employers benefit from a happy workforce. For any parents who may still need convincing, we’ve got two suggestions to help them get even more value from Childcare Vouchers:

Use Childcare Vouchers to maximise your tax savings in the current financial year...

Employees who’ve been thinking about registering for the scheme but not got around to it yet should know that if they apply before the end of the current tax year (5th April 2017), they can backdate their vouchers to the beginning of the current tax year. This means that basic rate tax payers can claim their allowance of £243 per month, going back as far as 6th April 2016. They can select to use as much or as little of this allowance as they wish; a parent on basic rate tax registering in September 2016 for example, could claim a maximum of 6 months’ allowance in backdated vouchers - £1,458. Parents who want to take advantage of this tax saving need to act quickly - the sooner they register, the more they’ll be able to save.

Some conditions apply:

  • Employee must not have already used their childcare tax allowance
  • Child must have been born prior to months being claimed
  • Employee must have parental responsibility for period being claimed
  • Employee must have been employed by current employer for period claimed
  • Deductions must not take employee’s earnings below the National Minimum Wage (company directors are exempt from this condition)

Use Childcare Vouchers to cover tuition fees...

While Vouchers are most often used to subsidise the cost of childminders, nurseries and playgroups, they are extremely flexible and can be used against a wide range of services including before and after school clubs and holiday clubs, helping parents to arrange the cover that best suits their working arrangements. Vouchers can also be extremely useful for parents of older children who are preparing for key stage examinations like the 11 Plus, SATS or GCSEs, as they can be used to help pay for tuition fees. (Please note that Childcare Vouchers can only be redeemed with registered childcare providers.)

Get the maximum value from your Childcare Vouchers...

Following the expense of Christmas, January can seem like an especially long month for employees,  particularly those who have to pay for childcare. Childcare Vouchers...More uses than you might think.

Back to school in September... and with more uses and benefits than you might think...
As pupils settle into their new classes, many working parents are contemplating the rising costs that make paying for childcare one of the biggest challenges that they face today – and wondering how they’re going to balance their finances. Gemelli Childcare Vouchers make quality childcare more affordable. They provide a simple, flexible and tax-efficient way for employers to help their employees with registered childcare costs. Operated on a salary exchange basis, this employee benefit is free from tax and National Insurance, allowing working parents to pay for childcare out of their gross salary.

A wide range of uses...
While many may be familiar with the general details of Childcare Voucher Schemes, what’s often not recognised is their versatility and longevity. For instance, they’re not solely limited to more traditional childcare settings – Gemelli Childcare Vouchers can be used for any of the following:

  • Nurseries, playgroups and crèches
  • Childminders, Nannies and Au Pairs
  • Before and After-School Clubs
  • Holiday Clubs
  • Day, weekly, or termly boarding
  • Tutoring and Education Centres

Moreover, neither are they just for use with pre-school children. Because they can be used for childcare up to the age of 15 (or 16 if there is a disability), their flexibility and the length of time over which they can be used is a real advantage.

Benefits for both Employees and Employer
Introduced by the Government to help support working parents, the scheme benefits both employee and employer:

Employee Benefits

  • Overall reduction of childcare costs
  • Annual savings of up to £933 (£77 per month) in Tax and National Insurance
  • Opportunity to double annual savings to £1,866 if both parents are registered in the scheme
  • Assists in planning and management of household finances – ability to budget monthly (and option to contribute as little as £10 per month)
  • Freedom to choose when and how you use the vouchers: Can be banked for future use with no time limit or expiry date
  • Option of Paydirect or an account
  • It’s not means-tested

Employer Benefits

  • Savings made on Employer National Insurance Contributions – up to £402 per employee per year
  • Reinforces company’s commitment to employee support and welfare
  • Increases morale, motivation and engagement
  • Supports strong recruitment and retention – and facilitates and incentivises return to work
  • The scheme is self-financing
  • Simple and flexible to set up – options for minimal self-administration or let Gemelli take care of everything

Gemelli Childcare Vouchers are a great way for working parents who pay for their childcare – and their employers – to save themselves money. They don’t just offer cost-saving benefits either: parents can take advantage of their versatility and employers from the support benefits that they bring their employees. All in all, it consistently proves to be yet another highly cost-effective way for businesses and their employees to mutually prosper.

Reprieve for Childcare Vouchers...

Reprieve for Childcare Vouchers as Government Postpones Tax-Free Childcare Scheme...

Gemelli has just received official notification from HMRC that the Government’s plans to launch the new Tax-Free Childcare scheme have been delayed until early 2017. Prior to this announcement, it had been anticipated that Tax-Free Childcare would launch in autumn 2015, replacing the existing Childcare Voucher scheme.

This postponement means that working parents with children aged up to 16 – and the businesses that employ them – still have the opportunity to take advantage of the current Childcare Voucher scheme. Operated through employers, the scheme allows working parents to pay for childcare prior to having tax and National Insurance deducted from their salary. For many parents, the scheme can save them almost £1,000 a year on childcare, and employers benefit too, saving up to £402 per employee, per year in National Insurance contributions.

Registering now for the Childcare Voucher scheme makes good sense: It will eventually be closed, but parents who have already registered will be able to choose whether to stay on the existing scheme or switch to Tax-Free Childcare, depending on which best suits their circumstances at the time.

If you’re an employer, setting the scheme up is quick and easy, and if you’re an employee, we can have you registered in no time at all. Call us now on 01280 851113 to discuss registering for Childcare Vouchers, or email us.

Save £1000's on childcare before it's too late...

Changes to the Childcare Voucher Scheme are due to come into force in autumn 2015, but the Government’s new Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) plans have already received criticism: They will not be available for households with only one working parent, initially not for children over 5, it may leave one child families worse off  and parents will have to reapply every three months.

Until TFC comes into force though, employers can still offer staff the existing salary sacrifice Childcare Voucher Scheme. This current scheme, provides parents with vouchers and gives an annual tax saving of up to £933 per parent employee. Open to any size of business, employers can administer the salary sacrifice scheme themselves, or use a voucher provider who will operate the scheme on their behalf.

Heather Start, Director of Gemelli Employee Benefits said: “There’s still time for small business owners to make significant savings on childcare for themselves and for all companies to help their employees through the salary sacrifice Childcare Voucher Scheme. As well as helping working parents, businesses will also save up to £400 on Employers NI contributions per year per employee – why wait when you can make savings now.”

Any employees who are on the current Childcare Voucher Scheme prior to autumn 2015 will be able to continue receiving Childcare Vouchers until their child no longer qualifies, or until they move to a new employer.  This will keep their options open until they know which scheme suits them best.
